A First “Look” at the Amazon Echo Look

Right off the bat: Yes, it has a stupid name. But our society thinks everything has a stupid name before they get used to it.

With that being said, Amazon made the Echo Look official today. It’s a smart camera with full Alexa functionality, meaning it can do everything the original Echo can do and more. It can play music or audiobooks, look things up on Wikipedia, and has access to the entire library of apps, or skills, for Echo.

Now, of course, it can also do more. This Echo device took the focus away from the speaker and instead added a camera. It may look similar to a home security device, the trailer for the Echo Look showed that they are focusing on something different. The 5MP depth shooter is meant to take portrait photos and videos. It is made for fashion: The Look uses its depth sensors to blur out the background of your photos, which they say makes them “pop” and makes it easier for you to choose between two outfits. Of course, it wouldn’t be very Amazon-like to stop there. They included something called StyleCheck, which apparently compiles knowledge from fashion experts and has a computer choose between two outfits for you.

Now the thing that people immediately thing is, “what about privacy?” First of all, everything has a camera in it nowadays. Your phone, your laptop, your iMac, your Kinect. Hell, my Fire Phone has not one, not two, not five, but SIX cameras built in. Privacy is beyond us. But with that being said, nobody at the NSA wants to spy on someone who sits on their bed for most of the day.

Now, if I didn’t have an Echo, I would probably buy this. Unless the speaker is crap, because I am not so interested in the speaker.

If Amazon is reading this, here is some device for the Echo 2- make it modular. Allow for first and third party accessories. Think about it: Want a better speaker? Snap in the speaker booster module. Want a camera? There is a module for that. Want it to function like an Echo Tap? Add a battery module. Want a tiny LCD screen that shows recent purchases, music that is playing, and makes it so you don’t have to go into the app? Screen module. There is so much that can be done with the Alexa AI system, and right now only hackers and developers get to access its full abilities.

Well, without further ado, here is the first look commercial for the Echo Look:
